After some reflection I’ve decided to dip my toes back into the newsletter game. I’ve missed corresponding with many of you and have decided that now is just as good a time as any to start writing again.
This newsletter also comes with an invitation.
On January 1, 2023 I will be participating in the 120th Polar Bear Plunge in Historic Coney Island. I invite you to join me on the boardwalk this New Year’s Day for the Polar Bear Plunge.1
The first time I “took the plunge” was on January 1, 2020. You can read about my first plunge experience and my baptism as a “Real New Yorker” here. About three months after my first plunge the world ended…well no it didn’t, but COVID-19 ended the world as we knew it. There was no Polar Bear Plunge in 2021 due to the pandemic, but the second registration opened for the 2022 plunge, I was in.
Since my first plunge in 2020 a lot has happened in my life. I enrolled in grad school, became a father, and have grown personally and spiritually in more ways than one can count.
I’m sure a lot has happened in your life as well. I cannot believe how much has happened in the past three years, but in this moment I’m reminded of an unattributed quote I picked up in a self-help book awhile back…
The days are long, but the years are short
A dramatic way of saying “time flies,” but the sentiment is true. There is only now and if you want to experience something that will enrich your life, I endorse doing something crazy at least once a year.
If you are able, please donate to my fundraising page for the Plunge. Coney Island is one of the truly great and historic public spaces in New York City and I want to do whatever small amount I can to support the community.

Last, but not least…PLEASE JOIN ME2 in bringing in a new year of hope and adventure in Coney Island this New Year’s Day. Just respond “Yes” or “I’m in!” or “hell yea” to this email and I’ll send you an invite with more details.
Thank you in advance and I look forward to picking up our correspondence while ringing in the New Year in historic Coney Island.
note that you can hang out on the boardwalk & beach and not go in the water. It’s great people watching and you can drink some light beers to nurse a NYE hangover. I do highly encourage folks to sign up for the plunge tho. Get back in da New York Groove in 2023 babyyy
again attending the event does not require you to go into the water or donate any money, but I strongly encourage both. You’ll thank me later.
